The civil ceremony itself may only be 15 mins long, but there’s so much more happening than just those 15 minutes. Greeting friends and family members who flew in across the globe just to witness this special moment. Reuniting with mentors from your childhood who you haven’t met in ages but still hold a significant place in your heart. Calling friends over zoom who couldn’t make it, but stayed up late until midnight so although they’re not physically there, they’re still “there” for you. It’s never ever just about the quick 15 minute singing. If only we stop and take a moment to observe, then all these emotions and personal connections start surfacing. A standard photo of the newly weds holding their certificate smiling towards the camera is never what I’m looking for. It’s THESE photos that I’m looking for. Photos showing how the day went, showing how close their bonds are, showing moments that might just fly under the couples radar. To be able to photograph a wedding and have that gallery reflect more than what happened within that 15 minute time frame will always be what I continuously strive to be able to do.
